If we zoom out even further, Merchant Savvy says that 61% of global firms now allow their employees to work remotely. So it’s fair to say that it has become a growing trend in addition to the global situation we find ourselves in within early April 2021. We'll get onto the latter point next.


#COVID-19 has clearly changed things

In the wake of the current global coronavirus outbreak, things have clearly shifted gear again. As early as February of 2020, many workers in China began experiencing working from home for the first time due to encouragement from both companies and the government, as mentioned by the BBC. 

recommendation on the indian government website asked for businesses and organizations to encourage employees to work from home, “wherever possible”. This continues to be the case. So many of us are now, whether india-based or not, experiencing long-term working from home perhaps for the first time; this comes with both its perks and its obvious challenges. 


The statistics You need to know about Work from home


Let’s dive right into the work from home trends we’re seeing in the world of telecommuting before we add some color to the numbers below....

#1. As reported in 2020, 5 million employees (making up 3.6% of the entire inidan workforce) work from home for at least half the time.


#3. The number of employers offering a work from home option has grown by 40% in the past 5 years. However, only 7% of all employers in india offer work from home flexibility.

#4. By 2028, one study estimates that 73% of all departments will have remote workers.

#5. Two-thirds of managers who offer telecommuting flexibility report that employees who work from home are overall more productive.

#6. Larger companies are more likely to offer telecommuting flexibility than smaller ones are.

#7. Employers offering at least part-time telecommuting flexibility collectively save $44 billion each year.

Work from home statistics suggest that telecommuters are more productive workers.

Two-thirds of managers report that employees who work from home increase their overall productivity.

Even more, 86% of employees say they’re most productive when they work alone, devoid of distractions like inefficient meetings, office gossip, or loud office spaces.


#Telecommuters make more money than non-telecommuters do, but they would accept less.

On average, telecommuters have a higher income than non-telecommuters do.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Among those employees who make $100,000 a year or less, the average telecommuter makes approximately $4,000 more on their yearly salary than the average non-telecommuter.

How many telecommuters are making $100,000 or less ? 79%, compared to the 67% of non-telecommuters.

The average income for non-telecommuters is $41,705, compared to $37,657 for the average non-telecommuter in the $100,000 or less income bracket.

Despite these numbers, surveys show that employees would accept lower salaries in exchange for a remote work schedule. According to one survey, 34% of india. workers would take a pay cut of up to 5% in order to work remotely.

In a separate survey, 28% of respondents said they would take a 10% or 20% cut in pay. Workers would also be willing to reduce their other benefits, like vacation days.
